Star of Africa

The Star Of Africa — omglog

It started as a board game.  The African version of Monopoly perhaps?  I don't know, I've never played it.

It turned into an international quilting blog block swap.  (Say that 10 x real fast!)  Last April was my turn to be queen of the bee and I asked for blocks that would fit in this quilt.

Star of Africa Quilt Idea

I asked each bee member to make a 10.5" block. (10" finished)  Set in a traditional Trip Around the World quilt made from 5.5" squares.  The finished quilt would be roughly 85" x 85"

This month my blocks started pouring in from around the globe.  (Which is quite a treat!)

First in was....

Patti from Saskatoon BC Canada!  Look at that sweet swag!  Thank you Patti!!

A few days later I heard from Fiona Duggan in the UK.

Yesterday it was Benta, also from the UK

I want to thank all of these lovely ladies.  You packages were perfectly timed.  I pray that my parcels have equally poignant timing when they arrive at their destinations.

hey, ho, and another one bites the dust!

Home is Where The Heart Is...Texas

This one has been sent off to Berlin Germany to Mrs! Sana whose theme was "Home is where the heart is."

Camera Roll-38

Four packages mailed today....all international....to the tune of $46.90.  I hate to do it, but I might have to rethink this swapping thing.

And an odd fact for you....did you know that "bites the dust" is a phrase that has it's origins in ancient Greece?  Homer started it.  Just thought you'd want to know.

And another one bites the dust....

Texas Butterfly

Yeeeee-haw!  November 2012 block for the Star of Africa Bee - FINISHED!!

Better late than never...

...and just a little Tacky.

Tacky finished!

This is my offering for Nicky of Mrs Sew and Sow fame.  I was supposed to make a block depicting a favorite children's story book character....preferably from our home lands.  I was supposed to make it last October...something went horribly wrong with my timing.

I chose Tacky the Penguin by Helen Lester, and illustrated by Lynn Munsinger.   Tacky is a wonderfully quirky bird who doesn't quite fit in with the flock.  It might have something to do with his Hawaiian shirt.  There are several Tacky books.  Check him out.  I think you will be glad you did.

Sorry it took me so long Nicky.  He will be flying off to you tomorrow.

Star of ......

I've recently joined a new blogger's bee.  It is called Star of Africa.

Star of Africa

17 bloggers from around the globe are participating.  Each month we are to make a block that represents our home and send it off to the star of the month.

This month our blocks are going to Saskatoon, Saskatchewan, Canada!  This is my offering.  It is rather plane...but I think it is the perfect thing to give Patti a taste of my home.

The Texas Lone Star is a common site in clothing, architecture, and home decor.  I wasn't born here...but I have to say I'm proud to be here now.  I hand pieced the central star of this block and then added a few borders to set it off.

My turn doesn't come up until April 2013.  (I picked that month to celebrate my birthday!) This is what I am thinking.....I will receive 16 blocks....

What better setting could there be for blocks from around the world?!
